X iv : h ep - p h / 96 12 25 2 v 1 4 D ec 1 99 6 Excited Baryon Spectroscopy in the Large N c Limit

The leading in 1/N c spin-flavor symmetry breaking mass splittings, of order N 0 c , in excited non-strange Baryons are shown to be given, up to two-body operators, by three different effective Hamiltonians: Thomas precession spin-orbit, spin-isospin tensor, and spin-orbit with isospin exchange. Explicit expressions for their matrix elements between low excited Baryons are obtained, and the structure of the mass splittings in large N c is established to first order of perturbation theory. The problem of extending the large N c results to the real world with N c = 3 is briefly addressed.

We show that there is a double counting in the standard model of n¯ n mixing in the medium, resulting in full cancellation of leading terms. The direct calculation of n¯ n transition, annihilation is performed. For lower limit on the free-space n¯ n oscillation time we get τ min ∼ 10 31 y.
